Antony had determined to take his route through a
plain and open country; but a certain Mardian, who
was well acquainted with the practices of the Par-
tisans, and had           his faith to the Romans at
the battle when the machines were lost, advised him to

heavy-armed troops in an open country to the attacks
of the Parthian bowmen and cavalry.
