The temptation toward stylistic solipsism (where form is content, and thus a kind of linguistic           into subjectivity) betrayed by modernist literature arises not simply as a development o f symbolism and as a reaction against science (toward pleasure, as in Poe, or meaning, as in Eliot), but through strictly carrying out literary realism, as seen in Joyce's move from Dubliners to and within Ulysses and into the Wake.
