Thomas Sydenham (1624-1689) was an English practitioner known for the changes he introduced into medical knowledge. As Foucault notes in Histoire de lafolie, pp. 205 207 (omitted from the English translation), he organized knowledge ol pathology according to new norms by making a method ol observation, taking into account the symptoms described by the patient, against the medical systems, like Galenism or iatrochemistry, which relied on a speculative approach--earning him the name "the English
