There were three festivals of Bacchus at Athens at which dramatic           took place, the Dionysia kat' agrous, or, "in the fields;" the Lenaia, or ta en limnais, or "the marshes," a part of the city near the Acropolis, in which was situated the Lenaion, an enclosure dedicated to Bacchus; and the ta en astei, "in the city," or ta megala Dionysia.
