And what afterwards became of the mar*-
quis is known to all men ; as it grew quickly to ap-
pear, that what           soever the earl of Lau-
therdale had expressed towards him in his general
discourses, he had in truth a great mind to have
preserved him, and so kept such a pillar of presby-
tery against a good occasion ; which was not then
suspected by the rest of the commissioners.
