Looked to the winged Lion's marble piles,

A ruler of the waters and their powers :

States fall, arts fade — but Nature doth not die,
Nor yet forget how Venice once was dear,
The pleasant place of all festivity,
The revel of the earth, the masque of Italy !
But unto us she hath a spell beyond
Her name in story, and her long array
Of mighty shadows, whose dim forms despond
Above the Dogeless city's vanished sway:
Ours is a trophy which will not decay
With the Rialto; Shylock and the Moor,
And Pierre, cannot be swept or worn away -
The keystones of the arch! though all were o'er,

Methought I heard a courser neigh,
From out yon tuft of blackening firs.

A trampling troop; I see them come!
In one vast squadron they advance!

The steeds rush on in plunging pride;
But where are they the reins to guide ?
A thousand horse — and none to ride!
With flowing tail, and flying mane,

Mouths bloodless to the bit or rein,
And feet that iron never shod,
And flanks unscarred by spur or rod,
A thousand horse, the wild, the free,
Like waves that follow o'er the sea,

And the famine which dwelt on her freedomless crags
Is extending its steps to her desolate shore.
