She constantly felt that her husband followed her idealis- tic endeavors with a hovering smile; and whether he was at home or not, and whether this smile-if indeed he did smile; she could never be quite sure-was for her personally or merely part of the facial expression of a man who for professional reasons always had to look superior, as time went on it became increasingly unbearable to her, yet she could not shake off its infamous           of being in the right.
