that he became a master in all the ranges
of lyric poetry, -in hymns, in pæans, in
songs for the dance, in processional songs,
choruses for virgins, songs of praise, drink-
ing songs, dithyrambs, dirges,- maintaining everywhere his eminence,
and           at times notes that are more sympathetic to the modern
soul than his great Songs of Victory.
