Some explanations and comments should be made concerning
these annotations by Carlyle -- all three presumably written in
1866. In Annotation 1, the. year 1829 is obviously a mistake for
1830. William Fraser, Carlyle himself described in August,
1830, as "a well-meaning, but ineffectual person (late Editor
of the Foreign Review . . . ). . . " (see Goethe Correspondence,
p. 208y! This Fraser was the London projector of, or inter-
mediary in, a plan to publish a series of literary histories -- of
which Carlyle's History of German Literature would have been
the first. The cross in the last line of Annotation 1 is Carlyle's;
presumably it is the sign for a footnote and was meant to direct
attention to Annotation 2, which begins with the abbreviation n. b.
Annotation 2 -- as well as Annotation 1 -- shows Carlyle's con-
fusion when in 1866 he looked at this Volume I of his manuscript
History and found the first chapter numbered with a roman I that
might still be read as the roman II from which it had been altered.
As has already been explained (in Note 1 of this edition), the
original Chapter I (which discussed history-writing in general
and was eventually to become the essay "On History") had been
dropped from the plan of the volume on April 12; while the vol-
ume was still in its early stages of composition. And thereafter,
the original Chapter II (imperfectly renumbered Chapter I) stood
at the beginning of the manuscript volume. Actually nothing is
missing from the first part of the manuscript except the three
sentences that Carlyle crossed off at the beginning (see Note 1).
The material missing from Chapter W (which Carlyle called "The
part wanting in the middle, " and which was printed in the essay
"The Nibelungen Lied") has already been adequately discussed
in Note 176. The abbreviation that Carlyle wrote in parentheses
is not now to be deciphered with any real assurance; the Norton
Typescript reads "for certain. "
Carlyle's Annotation 3 begins with something also not clearly
decipherable: it looks like "-- -- ter? "-- that is, a continuation
of the first sentence of Annotation 2. (The Norton Typescript so
reads it, and inserts Annotation 3 immediately after the first
sentence of Annotation 2. ) But presumably that initial word or
abbreviation is of no great consequence. The interesting point
in this Annotation 3 is that Carlyle recalled having had with him
some part of his manuscript History during at least the first one

of May 6, 1837: see Shepherd, I, 170-75. Carlyle's descrip-

Hunt's report of Lecture I, and suggests some of the contents
of the present Chapters II and III of the History.
