SHAKESPEARE'S INFLUENCE ON SIR WALTER SCOTT
By Wilmon Brewer
The task is now accomplished once for all. -- The New York Herald.
Thorough and with consistent fairness leaving no room for doubt or contro-
versy. An important contribution to the study of English literature. -- The
Boston Herald.
A very scholarly and at the same time very delightful book. An important
work, presenting an immense amount of careful and discriminating research.
A picture of Scott's life and mental processes together with a very thorough
review of Scott's work in prose and poetry. An exceedingly useful appendix
traces the influence of other authors than Shakespeare. -- The Christian
Endeavor World.
A most satisfying work. A thorough piece of literary analysis. -- Sidney Lee:
Author of A Life of William Shakespeare; Editor of The Dictionary of National
Biography.
The subject needed investigating. Done in a workmanlike manner. -- William
Allen Neilson: President of Smith College; Author of The Facts about Shake-
speare; Editor of Shakespeare's Complete Works.
A most valuable contribution to our knowledge both of Shakespeare and of
Scott. -- J. T. Murray: Professor of Dramatic Literature, Harvard University;
Author of English Dramatic Companies (1588-1642).
The subject matter is interesting and convincing; the style clear, easy, yet
profuse in thought. -- Alexander Dean: Assistant Professor of Play Production,
Yale University; Author of Little Theatre Organization and Management.
I am struck by the clarity and ease of your presentation. -- Leslie Hotson:
Professor of English, Haverford College; Author of The Death of Christopher
Marlowe and of The Commonwealth and the Restoration Stage.
An admirable book. -- Wilbur L. Cross: Dean of the Graduate School, Yale
University; Author of Development of the English Novel; Editor of The Yale
Review.
An interesting and helpful study of the subject. -- Bliss Perry: Professor of
English, Harvard University; Author of A Study of Prose Fiction; Editor of
Scott's Woodstock and Ivanhoe.
The work appeals to me as well devised and thoroughly executed. I had no
notion of the enormousness of Scott's debt to Shakespeare. A remarkable series
of borrowings. -- Paul Elmer More: Author of Shelburne Essays and of The
Greek Tradition.
