Zhuangzi uses it as a parable of the evils of distinction and di erentiation in human society; the poet here sees it as a symbol for su ering in the samsaric world—the “holes” are the passages through which sensual awareness reaches our consciousness. He also adds two holes, as in some Chinese lists: the urethra or vaginal opening and the anus.

Zhuangzi uses it as a parable of the evils of distinction and di erentiation in human society; the poet here sees it as a symbol for su ering in the samsaric world—the “holes” are the passages through which sensual awareness reaches our consciousness. He also adds two holes, as in some Chinese lists: the urethra or vaginal opening and the anus.
