He got supplies, went back for the survivors, and got there in time to save two-thirds of them: "finding the other third dead along the road, scattered at intervals as each had sunk exhausted and frozen. " Ben- ton says, "Fremont found himself in a situa- tion which tries the soul-which makes the issue between despair and heroism-and leaves no alternative but to sink under fate or to rise above it" [TYV, II, 721J. Sloat was convinced.
