In           terms this says nothing more than that groups which attach importance to long term success must be able to master existential crises through performance involving a high degree of cooperation under maximum pressure (which normally means proving oneself in war against competing cul- tures) - at the same time they are also dependent on the ability to remain vigilant in respect to the results of their conflicts with other groups and especially to be able to take the consequences of defeat and to anchor them in the cultural memory.
