And in general one would have to con- sider whether the primary orientation of the mass media lies in the social dimension at all, or not rather in the temporal dimension.
Chapter 4 System-specific Universalism

We owe the invention of this form of 'inferential entities' - both of the novel and of one's own real life - to the eighteenth century, to a curious dual development in the epistemology of Locke via Berkeley to Hume and Bentham as well as in the novel. It has reached its end in the art form of the novel and now seems to be reproduced only as a form of entertainment.
